Cleanse Fail.

So about that juice cleanse…

I lasted approximately 6 hours.

And 3 Green Juices.

Then I broke. And had a latte and a Lara Bar.

NOT STRONG ENOUGH.

I was dying without caffeine/solid food!

For some reason my will-power just wasn’t there. Not for any reason, I just simply wasn’t feeling it. So I just decided to “modify” the cleanse a bit… and drink 2 Green Juices a day, and replace 1 meal with the Cashew Milk drink.

Then since I figured I was on the straight and narrow, this happened.

No your eyes aren’t deceiving you – that is PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE, CHOCOLATE CREME BRULEE and TIRAMISU. Also known as heaven.

Sorry I’m not sorry.

A GIANT Sweep + Thrive – Day 1

Oh hi, happy Monday! I was just putting my broom away.

Why?

Oh just because the GIANTS SWEPT THE TIGERS TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES IN 4 GAMES.

Posey running to the pitcher’s mound after the final out is my all-time favorite moment of the World Series win in 2010 and 2012. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

Boyfriend and I watched the game at Nick’s Crispy Tacos in Russian Hill with some friends, and a few hundred other Giants fans. Once the final strike was called… well Polk Street pretty much exploded in celebration.

Also the Giants have been undefeated since the boot came on to my stress fractured heel. Coincidence? I don’t think so. You’re welcome world.

After being right in the thick of the revelry in 2010, the boot and I opted to drive home and listen to the madness from the safe distance of the apartment. We had a pretty good view of it all from where the car was parked off of Polk Street (thank you handicap parking placard). Boyfriend stayed out a bit longer to celebrate with the guys and take it all in, but needless to say I was more than happy to not come home covered in beer and champagne. If I have to wear this boot a few more weeks I’d rather it didn’t smell like stale alcohol.

The World Series win couldn’t have come at a better time, since today Jaime and I started a 2-Day Thrive Juice Cleanse!

Jaime discovered Thrive, which operates out of Nectar Wine Bar in the Marina during the day and I’ve been in no less than 10 times to pick up green juices. She did their cleanse, raved about it, and I immediately wanted in.

I picked up my juices yesterday (Megan and Stephanie, the owners are SO NICE), and couldn’t wait to get started. I bought a couple extra Green Dreams and Tropical Greens so that I could get my system used to the juices yesterday, but officially started today.

Last week was full of eating out, lots of wine and margaritas, sweet potato fries, and over indulging for the World Series. Add to it less than usual exercise (stuck on crutches will do that to a person), sitting on the couch for 10+ hours a day, and I was feeling a bit…. blah.

Cleansing seemed like the perfect solution. Detox, flush out toxins, and get back on track.

And really, how could overloading my body with Vegetable Juice for 48 hours not help my foot heal? It’s practically science.

I’m doing the Deep Dive Cleanse for 2 (and possibly 3) days. It includes:

  • 4 Green Dreams
  • 1 Lively Lemonade (my favorite!)
  • 1 Cozy Cashew Milk (which I plan to dump in a blender with a few ice cubes and some nut meg and make into a milkshake tonight)
  • 1 Aloe Vera Capsule (benefits of Aloe Vera capsules can be found here)

I also subbed out one of my Green Dreams for a Tropical Green (in which they swap the apple for pineapple for a little change of pace.) Really getting wild over here, I know.

This is my second time cleansing so I know what to expect (being cold, feeling weak, etc), and what not to do this time around (attempt to run or do pilates which I actually can’t do with a stress fractured heel… so that’s a win for the broken foot) so I feel more prepared for what’s to come over the next 2 days.

Workout wise, I plan to rest today (worked out Friday/Saturday/Sunday this past weekend) and then swim on Tuesday and bike on Wednesday. Nothing crazy strenuous, but enough to get some type of sweating into my day. (Stress fracture exercise update to come this week.)

With that, it’s time for Green Dream #3. Woo hoo lunchtime!

Post Cleanse Thoughts

The cleanse is officially O-V-E-R and I made it! 3 Days of a liquid juice diet successfully completed!

I swear I had trouble sleeping last night I was so darn excited to wake up and have breakfast. I realize I lead a sad little life, but it’s true. I jumped out of bed as soon as the alarm went off, and literally skipped to the kitchen to make my coffee.

Let me tell you, I’ve never appreciated real food so much.

So far today has been filled with delicious eats:

Tall Americano

Breakfast: GF brown rice tortilla, 2 scrambled eggs (microwaved in a coffee mug), fresh parmesan, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, tabasco sauce)

Lunch Part 1 – 0% Greek yogurt with agave, unsweetened coconut, raw sliced almonds, banana, scoop of PB, cinnamon

I’ve received a lot of questions regarding the cleanse, and I wanted to address them all and give you my post-cleanse thoughts. So here we go!

How Do I Feel?

100% Fantastic. I feel light, I’ve had ZERO stomach issues this week, I’m alert, focused and very clear-headed. I’m also now 4 full days Gluten Free and feel better than I have in weeks.

Only my muscles are incredibly sore and need more protein before I run like these guys.

Vanity wise – my skin is clear, I swear my hair is shinier, my stomach is flat as a pancake, everything is tight, and I have zero bloat (TMI? Perhaps, but I’m all about honesty over here).

Cleansing Side Effects?

I feel like I was extremely lucky to have zero side-effects. I didn’t have any headaches, any caffeine withdrawal symptoms, or any skin breakouts, dizziness, etc. I was fatigued and my muscles were really sore (again, don’t exercise while cleansing!) but that was the extent.

Would I Do It Again?

If you had asked me yesterday I would have given you a resounding HELL NO. But once all is said and done I would absolutely do it again – if I had an event (like my wedding, or an upcoming beach vacation) that I wanted to quickly detox for. This is a perfect detox cleanse for a post-holiday or other indulgent period in your life, pre-vacation or for brides-to-be. You’re still getting ample calories, you don’t feel like you’re starving and there is no dizziness/foggy head involved. After an especially indulgent time (holidays, gluten overload – oops), your body feels clean and refreshed.

I would also not exercise at all while cleansing. Your muscles just don’t have the fuel they need to perform at the level you’re probably used to. Hatha or Asana (read: easy/stretchy) yoga only.

Did I Lose Weight?

Yes. Although I’m fairly certain if you don’t eat solid food for 3 full days that’s a given. I don’t weigh myself, I just go by how my clothes feel. They’re loose, they fall perfectly, and I feel extremely tight in the abdominal area. But my stomach is the closest it will ever be to resembling Adriana Lima’s at the moment and I’m reveling in the next 24 hours until that goes away due to my plans to consume the most amazing homemade GF pizza tonight.

What Was The Hardest Part?

The insanely overpowering sensation to CHEW. Smelling other people’s food was pure torture. Also, do not watch hours of Food Network while you’re on a liquid juice cleanse. It only makes it worse.

Working out made the cleanse a lot harder – I was much hungrier than I would have been had I not worked out. On Day 1, when I took a rest day I felt the best, had the most energy, and had no sore muscles.

How Much Was It?

For the 3-Day cleanse it was $199. That includes 6 organic, raw, fresh-pressed juices and 2 organic, raw elixirs a day. It was $6 for pre-8am delivery on Day 1 of the Cleanse.

Each bottle comes with a $2 deposit, so after you rinse them out, and return them, they credit your account for the amount of bottles you return. (A great system and honestly the juice tastes much better out of a glass bottle than it does out of plastic. Plant I hope you’re taking note of this and up your game.)

How Did The Juices Taste?

Honestly they all tasted really good. My favorites were the Lemon-Aid (I cannot wait to buy this again), the Almond Drink (like a healthy milkshake!) and the Deep Green. The Coconut Water is far and away 100x better than anything you will buy in a grocery store too.

I’m used to buying fresh-pressed juices from The Plant and these blow them out of the water. Highly, highly recommend Juice to You – either for a one-off juice or a cleanse.

Overall Thoughts On Juice To You?

100% satisfied. The delivery was perfectly on-time, the juices were great, and their support was even better. The e-mails I received were detailed, and easy to follow. The website was informative and answered any questions I may have had. I loved that they listed the ingredients, the reason for drinking each juice, the benefits of cleansing, etc. I was never confused, or worried, I always felt confident.

I’m also a lot more in tune to what I’m putting into my body. After 3 days of nothing but raw, organic juice, I only want to put clean, whole foods into my body. I’m not craving sugar, or anything processed, and I want to ensure I’m only giving my body what it needs for fuel. I found that pretty interesting as well. Usually I’m craving some dark chocolate about 15 hours of any given day. (AKA the entire time I’m awake.)

Cleanse – Day 2

Day 2 of the Cleanse has come and gone. This day was a bit rougher than Day 1, and I was definitely craving food more and more. Here’s how it went down:

5:42 am – Pilates. This morning my day started a bit earlier than usual. After running 4 times in the AM last week, I kind of loved the feeling of being completely done by the time I would normally be waking up. Boyfriend had an early conference call this morning, so I did what any sane person would do… I signed up for 6am Pilates.

Yes this picture is from Boston – I feel a bit better taking pictures in a studio I’ll never go to again than I do in my normal studio. Appearances people.

I woke up feeling a little bit hungry, but nothing major, threw on a pair of Wunder Unders and a Cool Racerback (my most favorite Pilates clothing in the world) and a hoodie and sleepwalked to the studio. The class was hard and I’ll be honest I felt really sore. That can be attributed to: running 7 days in a row last week followed by Pilates. Needless to say coffee would have really helped me power through.

9:00 am – Elixir #1 – Blue Green Algae. I’m trying really hard to stick to the schedule Juice to You recommends, but I was really, really ready for my juice this morning. I now realize why “moderate” exercise is recommend but “severe” is not. I also have zero craving for or withdrawal from caffeine. That being said I cannot wait to bounce back into Starbucks on Thursday. I like the taste of espresso. +8 oz of water.

9:30 am – Juice #1 – Alpha Green. By this point I was starving, but after drinking the Alpha Green I felt like I’d had a proper breakfast. My hunger cues were gone, and I felt like my blood sugar was stabilized. I also had no craving for my cup of coffee (I feel like I’m betraying my precious Americanos for saying this). +8oz of water.

10:15 – Herbal (Caffeine Free) Tea – My company stocks Numi Organic Teas, so I grabbed a bag of Rooibos to drink (and warm myself up – it’s deceptively freezing outside today). The cleanse recommends drinking water or herbal caffeine free tea in between juices and this warmed me right up. I also drank 8oz of water.

11:30am – Juice #2 – Lemon Aid. To my surprise I wasn’t starving by the time 11:30 rolled around. I looked at the clock when it was 11:23 and a “It’s time for another juice already?!” thought crossed my mind. Savored every, little, tiny sip of this beauty. SO REFRESHING. Also had 8 oz of water.

1:58pm – Juice #3 – Beta Green. I got to this juice a bit late and I could definitely tell. I was starving. I also decided this is my least favorite and takes me the longest to drink. I’ve also been hit with an intense desire to chew something. It’s probably not helping that I’m staring at pictures of this and this (both of which are getting made on Thursday). Once I drank my juice I felt a LOT better, was completely satisfied (or as satisfied as one can be drinking juice) and my blood sugar was back to normal.

The hunger noises were gone and I felt more focused. The want to chew something (like a homemade pizza or a delicious grilled brown rice tortilla wrap filled with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, pesto and spinach hasn’t gone away in case you were wondering).

2:15pm – mug of Lemon Chamomile Tea. So cold. Must warm up.

3:30pm – Juice #4 – Coconut Water. Just so damn tasty. I’m sorry for cursing. It just had to be done to prove my point. I feel really light. My clothes feel loose, my stomach feels flat, and I won’t lie to you, it’s always a good feeling. I am however, craving solid food, if nothing else than to enjoy my meals and their flavors.

6:26pm – Juice #5 – Deep Green. My favorite of the green juices. Definitely got to this one a bit late. I knew I shouldn’t but my legs told me otherwise and I went to the gym for a speedy 3 miles (8:49 pace!) after work. Starving after. Thankfully the juice did the trick health-wise, but mentally I still want some chips and hummus, or an apple and almond butter. And don’t even get me started on a homemade pizza.

My mouth is WATERING for Thursday! There are few things worse than finishing a particularly satisfying run and not being able to enjoy a lovely dinner afterwards. Food = culture. I basically can’t stop thinking about food today. I blame the workouts.

7:30pm – Juice #6 – Almond Drink. Is there anything better than ending your day with a (healthified) version of a milkshake? No my friends, there is not. I love this drink. And I will re-create it time and time and time again.

Something I have noticed over the last couple of days? I’m FREEZING. All the time. My Raynauds is in full force. I can’t get warm enough. Clearly this is not the ideal number of calories for a person with my activity level. Do not run tomorrow.

9:44pm – Fall asleep on the couch while bundled up in a blanket, pants, long sleeves and socks. Yes it’s cold in SF but this is taking it to a whole other level. So freaking tired. Running was a terrible idea, and running 8:49’s was even worse.

10:30pm – Shot of Aloe. Down the hatch.

11pm- Crash into bed, pull duvet up to my ears. Sleep in said yoga pants, long sleeve and socks. Tell boyfriend I cannot wait for real food.

Overall Thoughts on Day 2?

I’m definitely tired come the evening, but that may have had something to do with the fact that I went to Pilates and ran a fast 3 miles as well. I’m absolutely freezing at all times. All times. It’s not the best feeling. I do feel really light, and I am satisfied after drinking the juices but it doesn’t stop me from wanting real food. Slept like a baby for a solid 10 hours last night, and feeling much better this morning. Although still so damn cold.

Day 2 complete! Bring on the LAST DAY OF THE CLEANSE!

Cleanse – Day 1

Day 1 of the Cleanse is COMPLETE! Yesterday, I awoke to a very helpful and informative e-mail from Juice To You with instructions on when to take juices, and some helpful tips. Then, like clockwork, Juice To You arrived at my doorstep (literally). The idea is that you drink a pint of juice (6 in total) every 2 hours, with a superfood elixir “shot” (2oz in the morning and 4oz at night) to start and end your day. They recommend you drink water in-between each juice.

Ready… BREAK!

6:47am – While in a deep sleep, I awoke to knocking on the front door. MY JUICE! I didn’t ask questions about how the guy got into my apartment building, I just took my 3 cooler bags from the nice man, and placed them safely in the refrigerator.

7:15am- Downed a pint glass of warm water. (They recommend you squeeze fresh lemon juice in the water but we may or may not have used our last lemon as part of a fish marinade last night.) Note to self: buy lemons.

At this point in my morning, I’ve usually had a cup of black coffee, and this morning I’m seriously craving my caffeinated friend. Try not to think about the fact that we won’t be reunited until Thursday.

9:00am – Elixir #1 – 2oz Blue-Green Algae, followed by a large cup of water. Gag at the name. Tastes surprisingly like almost nothing (and it’s gone in 2 sips). Have no idea what I just chugged so I research.

Blue-green algae is an all-organic, wild-harvested botanical algae. It is considered to be nature’s most beneficial superfood by renowned health authorities.

Benefits include:

  • increases endurance and stamina
  • fortifies the blood
  • lifts and balances mood to reduce stress
  • strengthens bones, teeth, skin, hair, and nails
  • supports brain and nervous system
  • balances blood-sugar levels
  • increases mental focus and concentration
9:30 am – Juice #1 – Alpha Green. Tastes like a normal green juice, and is surprisingly delicious. Hunger levels are normal – I don’t feel hungry, I just feel like I want to CHEW something. Large glass of water follows. (They recommend you drink water in-between juices throughout the day.)
  • celery
  • cucumber
  • sunflower sprouts
  • lemon

11:30am – Juice #2 – Lemon-Aid. SO FREAKING DELICIOUS. It tastes like lemonade with a gingery, spicy kick. I drink it slowly to savor every sip because I want it to last longer. I love this juice. Cup of water follows. At this point it’s just about lunchtime and I’m definitely starting to get a bit hungry. Mentally and Physically I feel great this morning – I completely forgot about my lack of caffeine, and have a lot of energy. Not something I was expecting!

In my very informative e-mail this morning, one of the tips was: “We recommend to keep your exercise regimen at a moderate level, thus not straining yourself.”  Blasphemy I say.I scrapped my planned lunch-hour 6 mile run in favor of a rest day. I figured after 7 days without one, it was probably time. Planning on a light run and Pilates Tuesday, and the same Wednesday.

  • Lemon
  • Agave
  • Ginger
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Filtered Water

1:30 pm – Juice #3 – Beta Green. Surprisingly FILLING! I sipped on this for about an hour at my desk and before I knew it, it was almost time for my next juice. You could definitely taste the carrot but I thought it tasted really sweet, delicious, and satisfied any hunger pangs I had going on.

  • Cucumber
  • Carrot
  • Spinach
  • Romaine
  • Parsley

3:30 pm – Juice #4 – Coconut Water.

OHMYGOD I’ve been missing out. Fresh coconut water tastes nothing like the stuff I convince myself tastes good, but really I choke down for a hangover/post-run benefit. I bet I could even get boyfriend to like this kind. It actually tastes like a coconut!

By this point in the day I’m usually starving and exhausted. I’m totally satisfied with no hunger pangs to speak of. I feel extremely alert, have a lot of energy, and haven’t yawned once this afternoon. I feel fantastic (if not a little cold because my office keeps the temperature in arctic range). I’m also coming off of 7 days of straight running/pilates exercise so typically I’d be really hungry at this point.

5:30 pm – Juice #5 – Deep Green.

Tasted a lot like the other green juice – filling, satisfying, and not at all like a plant.

  • Celery
  • Cucumber
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Romaine
  • Parsley
  • Lemon

7:30 pm – Juice # 6 – Almond Drink.

  • Raw Almonds
  • Coconut Water
  • Vanilla Bean
  • Himalayan Salt
  • Filtered Water

This tasted like a vanilla-almond-coconut MILKSHAKE. I savored every sip it was so tasty. Juice To You soaks their almonds in water for a full day before grinding them, to stimulate the nuts into sprouting. When a seed sprouts, it is buzzing with  nutrients and enzymes, so sprouting almonds are even healthier than regular almonds.

9pm – Elixir #2 – Aloe (SAY WHAT?)

This shot is designed to hydrate and support digestive function. The combination of aloe vera juice, young coconut water and lime juice hydrates your body while regulating your digestion.

Possible benefits include:

  • improves digestion
  • anti-inflammatory properties
  • hydrates the body
  • strengthens immune system

After my initial panic attack that I was drinking what I use to put on my skin after a sunburn, I took my shot of aloe… and it tasted like lemon water. Not bad in the least. (And it only lasted about 5 seconds).

Overall Thoughts On Day 1?

I never felt hungry. Not a once… and I’m a very hungry person by nature. I felt alert, focused and just overall great all day, which really surprised me. I was expecting headaches, dizziness, hunger pangs, etc and I didn’t experience any of that. I also feel really light, which I’m really enjoying. Typically Mondays are my longest days with work, a workout and then Pilates Teacher Training, and I’m a zombie by 10pm. Yesterday I was full of energy until I got into bed – a welcome change!

I didn’t work out yesterday, and the only time I even wanted to eat wasn’t because I was hungry, it was because I missed the sensation of chewing.

Day 1 Success!

Get Juiced

Something I’ve been entirely intrigued about, but not entirely sold on lately is the juice cleanse. I’ve been wanting to try one out for a while, but the timing was never right. I either had plans, an event, was in the middle of marathon training… the list could go on. Most of the larger juicing companies are located in New York or LA, and I wasn’t into the idea of getting fresh-pressed juice overnighted to me. (That being said, I hear awesome things about Cooler Cleanse and Blueprint Cleanse in NYC and Pressed Juicery in LA).

Then I found out that a juice cleansing company, Juice To You, opened a location (Juice Shop) on Union Street. While at the beach last weekend a friend was downing a juice from the Juice Shop and I asked her about it. She’d cleansed before and highly recommended it.

Consider my curiosity officially peaked.

I’ve seen the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” and I (shamefully) shell out $7 a few times a week for a 16oz fresh-pressed green juice from Plant, so I wasn’t a stranger to the idea of juicing. The idea of juice cleansing however was something I hadn’t tried.

And I really, really wanted to.

So last night I pulled the trigger. My stomach has been up in arms with the gluten as of late, so why not cleanse it all out? Remove all the toxins and all the crap, and see how it makes me feel?

Enter Juice to You – a San Francisco/Marin company with an outpost on Union Street (across from Lululemon… workout clothes and a fresh-pressed juice = win win win).

The company was started after their co-founder, Charlie Gulick was diagnosed with a rare liver disease after traveling in Central America. He was told he would eventually have to have a liver transplant. After many unsuccessful surgeries in attempt to manage his disease, he came across a world-renowned health institute where he took a holistic approach to his health. Charlie was placed on a strict regiment of juices, raw and vegan foods and treatments. He returned to the Bay Area and continued to maintain his new lifestyle. Charlie transformed his health and regained his strength, symptom free. Upon his return from the institute his family became his greatest support and they too benefited from his transformation. Drinking fresh organic juices daily was Charlie’s protocol for his health. It’s been six years and Charlie has not stepped foot into an operating room. While still monitoring his health, he has more energy than ever and feels great.

All information from Juice To You

I started to research.

Juicing

We provide the most nutrient rich cold-pressed juice possible. Using our hydraulic press, which gently extracts the juice right from the pulp, we maximize taste and nutritional value. Compared to other methods of juice extraction, pressed juice has a much higher nutritional content and is exposed to minimal oxidation, so the nutrients do not break down as rapidly. We are proud to use state of the art technology to provide the highest quality and best tasting juice.

We believe there are many benefits to drinking juice, from the tangible to the intangible. When you start your day with a glass of fresh juice, rather than sugary cereal, your whole outlook changes. You’re more mindful of what you eat, and how you feel, throughout the entire day.

Beyond the intangibles, possible benefits of drinking juice include:

  • Sharpens mental clarity
  • Increases energy levels
  • Improves digestive function
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Restores organ function
  • Normalizes body weight
  • Improves sleeping patterns
  • Balances pH levels
  • Reduces aches & pains
  • Clears complexion
  • Improves circulation
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Balances blood-sugar levels.
  • Cleanses colon

Cleansing

Juice cleanses give the body a break from food, while removing toxins and providing your body with the proper nutrients it needs to achieve and maintain optimal health.

Our cleanses are designed to clean your system in a safe and gentle way as you continue your daily routine. We have carefully selected four different levels of cleanses, consisting of six pints of juice and two elixirs daily. In order to experience the benefits of the cleanse, we recommend to stay away from solid foods while cleansing.

An ideal time to cleanse is after holidays or stressful periods in your life, times when we often over-indulge in unhealthy foods, alcohol, and habits. The change of seasons (spring and fall) is also an ideal time to cleanse. Most people will cleanse whenever they experience signs of over-acidity in the body, which may include chronic fatigue, headaches, insomnia, depression, allergies, aches & pains, digestive problems, unhealthy skin and a weakened immune system.

And I’m sold.

I was extremely impressed with the level of detail the company provides to it’s customers. Their juice ingredient list is exactly the type of information I love to pore over, and exactly the veggies, fruits, and ingredients I use in my own kitchen.

My 3-Day Intermediate Juice Cleanse includes each of the following per day:

  • 16 oz Alpha Green
  • 16 oz Lemon-aid
  • 16 oz Beta Green
  • 16 oz Coconut Water
  • 16 oz Deep Green
  • 16 oz Almond Drink
  • 4 oz Aloe
  • 2 oz E3 Live
They equal roughly ~1200 calories a day, but the kicker is that none of these calories are wasted or empty. They’re all chock-full of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.
I stopped by after Pilates yesterday, shelled out $9 (you get $2 back for returning their eco-friendly and re-useable glass bottles) for the A+ Deep Green and immediately knew I was making the right choice. This juice was amazing. Sorry Plant, they just owned you.
For a texture freak like myself it was smooth, it was cold, it was refreshing, and best of all, it was filling. I officially couldn’t wait.

My 3-day Juice Cleanse starts in about 10 minutes (with the handdelivery of my juices, I’m so swanky, I know) and I am so curious and intrigued about how it will make me feel.

Daily updates, information about each juice, and a post-cleanse recap to follow! 🙂
