Smorgasbowl – Quinoa Edition!

Remember when I made double the recommended serving of quinoa on Thursday?

Then promised (and failed) to eat it Friday morning for breakfast? (And had a smoothie instead.)

Well tonight, it was put to good use.

Neither of us really felt like “cooking” but we had ample food to prepare a meal without spending more money on groceries or take-out. (We had 2 casualties to throw out tonight, so we wanted to make sure we used up as much as we could! My sincerest apologies ear of corn and package of fresh basil. Your time came too soon.)

So naturally only one thing seemed a logical choice for dinner.

Smorgasbowl – Quinoa Edition.

In the mix?

  • Rotisserie Chicken – pulled and chopped
  • Chopped red onion
  • Arugula
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Goat, parmesan and mozzarella cheese
  • Quinoa
While I was busy at work pulling the chicken (while gagging even though it was fully cooked), boyfriend chopped up the red onion and threw it in a saucepan. He then stirred in some balsamic and baby arugula then the chopped chicken, and finally the leftover quinoa making it one, big, happy bowl. The cheese was added last and mixed right in.
We split it up and served it into bowls (clearly), and enjoyed!
Delicious, nutritious, and very filling. Not to mention flavorful! The balsamic and goat cheese mixed with the sweet red onion was SO tasty! I downed my entire bowl (and a chocolate milk on the side!)
Time to do the dishes, watch a documentary on Ben & Jerry’s, then put away the spoils of our travels to the Outlets today…
Productive Sunday indeed! 🙂
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Movie Night!

Is it really Sunday night already?

Our weekend was spent… totally relaxing.

It was glorious. Every now and again it’s nice to just do nothing on a weekend and recharge the batteries.

Last night we stayed in with our Kona Longboard Lagers and had a movie night!

On the agenda?

First Up:

It was excellent. Perfect role for Matthew McConaughey as the tough, take-no-BS lawyer and Ryan Phillipe was his usual spoiled rich kid but still totally creepy self (a la Sebastian in Cruel Intentions). I did not see the twist coming, (as an avid Law and Order SVU viewer I was certain I’d be able to point it out a mile away) and it was suspenseful up until the closing credits.

Definitely worth watching!

Next Up?

Rather than drop another $5.99 to Comcast (they take enough of our money every month) we went to the Netflix Instant Queue and decided on… Reindeer Games.

Who doesn’t love a little vintage Charlize and Affleck?

Great movie! (But a little violent. Not Quentin Tarantino violent, but I definitely cringed a few times!) Once again, I did not see the twist coming. The twist could have punched me in the face and I still wouldn’t have seen it coming! I actually don’t think I took a breath for a good 15 minutes, it was getting that suspenseful. Definitely a great movie! (Aside from Gary Sinise’s hair style… I’m sorry but it doesn’t make you hardcore, it makes you look like a bum.)

What’s the last movie you rented or saw?

Do you buy “on-demand” or stick with Netflix?

We usually stick with Netflix but decided last night we reallly wanted this new release so we bit the bullet! Next time, we’ll just order it via Netflix DVDs.

Full House + Mrs. Doubtfire

Hope your Saturday is going well!

Once we were sufficiently stuffed from our protein packed breakfast, we hit the road for some errands!

Boyfriend wanted to pick up some fresh sashimi from the sushi market in Japantown, Nijiya.

If you are a sushi (sashimi) lover, this is your place. Sooo many kinds of sashimi grade fish! (And at a steal!)

Then (after some You-Tubing and Googling last night) we were shocked to find out that the actual “Full House” house wasn’t where we thought it was (by the Painted Ladies- a group of houses across from Alamo Square Park) after all these years.

Painted ladies is a term used for Victorian and Edwardian houses and buildings painted in three or more colors that embellish or enhance their architectural details Source

So naturally we had to go find it.

The Opening Credits in Alamo Square Park in front of the Painted Ladies (the row of houses):

(Yes I’m right there with you on the quality, but it’s for location’s sake only)

Actual Alamo Square Park with Painted Ladies:

The Tanner’s House:

Doing my best Michelle Tanner.

Notice anything different?

The actual “Full House” house is actually no where near the Painted Ladies, or the opening scene of the show.

The house is located at 1709 Broderick Street (between Pine and Bush).

The opening scene (and Painted Ladies which are definitely worth seeing are actually on Steiner St between Grove and Hayes).

We had always assumed it was right where they shot the scene, so when we found out otherwise, we had to find it for ourselves! (And take awkward tourist pictures while we were at it!)

Want more TV/Movie Locations?

Continue on Steiner towards the water and you’ll hit the corner of Broadway and Steiner, 2640 Steiner St in Pacific Heights.

You’ll find yourself right in front of the Hillard’s house from one of my all-time favorite movies…

Mrs. Doubtfire!

“My name? Doubtfire.”

“I beg your pardon?”

“Doubtfire dear. Mrs. Doubtfire.”

After all of that SF movie location photography it was time to re-fuel. Since we just so happened to be around the corner from a self-serve fro-yo place (I’m sure it was fate) I needed an afternoon pick-me-up.

I’m going to need to start getting this at least once a day. Vanilla and PB fro-yo with graham cracker dust, rainbow sprinkles and yogurt chips. Perfection.

And gone way, way too fast.

Time to quench our thirst with a couple of Kona Longboard Lagers while we watch the end of the Giants games (realllly hoping they can stage a comeback!)

Last year when we vacationed in Hawaii with my family we went for lunch at the Kona Brewing Company and bought a variety pack of Kona beers at Costco and have been hooked ever since. It’s far and away my all-time favorite beer and I can’t wait to go back!

Every time I drink one it reminds me of being in Hawaii and relaxing after a long (and obviously taxing) day at the beach. 😉

Enjoy your Saturday evening!

Weekend Scramble

Gooood morning! (Well, afternoon now!)

After I fell asleep at 10pm on the couch last night, we slept in until around 10:30 this morning and I woke up feeling completely refreshed and rested – probably the same way Lindsay Lohan felt this morning after her sober night out.

We also woke up with ~4 mosquito bites each (mine being on my face…. great placement. Hello Cortaid!)

Today’s workout may happen later, or it may be my rest day of the weekend (the latter is looking more likely). All I do know is that I’m more than a little happy I ran those 6 miles yesterday and got it out of the way! (Even if I almost died of boredom on the dreadmill. Next time wind resistance > treadmill boredom!)

Neither of us realllly were in the mood to cook so we went with an easy weekend breakfast!

Rotisserie Chicken, Mozzarella, and Paprika Scramble with Hemp Bagels!

Boyfriend makes the most delicious scrambled eggs I’ve ever had, so he was on cooking duty this morning 🙂

As an appetizer… we munched on some Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies! They’re just so darn good.

Adding the extra chocolate chips was an excellent decision.

I’ve talked about these Hemp Bagels before but I can’t say enough about them!

19 grams of protein each (we split the last one we had left), ~270 calories, and they taste like sprouted wheat sourdough – with LOTS of seeds! I highly recommend. We found them in the freezer section at Whole Foods. They’re also Vegan!

We’re off to run some errands and enjoy a relaxing Saturday! Hope yours is going well! 🙂

What’s your favorite weekend breakfast??

While I love the occasional french toast, pancakes, or waffles, egg scrambles and bagels with goat cheese take the cake!

What do you have planned for this weekend?

Not much over here! We were go-go-go last weekend so we’re planning on relaxing, grabbing a couple drinks this evening, and doing a little shopping tomorrow!

Post Workout… Cookies?

Ahhh it’s here. FINALLY.

Since I took it easy yesterday I was raring to go this afternoon. I was able to leave work a little early (with manager’s approval of course – ahhh the joys of the last day of the month in a sales job) and since it’s been ridiculously windy in the afternoons, I really wasn’t feeling an outdoor run and having to deal with all that resistance.

Add to that we have a special visitor for the weekend so I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do a longer(ish) run tomorrow so I decided to buck up and just get it done on the dreadmill so I wouldn’t have to think about it all weekend.

After all I had my Kindle and the demise of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s marriage to get me through – they wouldn’t let me down. (Seriously, is anyone actually surprised this didn’t last?)

Thanks for the magazine Mom!

I completed 6 miles in about 54 minutes then cooled down for a half mile before doing some ab exercises and stretching.

I came home starving and after about 1/2 a jar of peanut butter and an apple, obviously had to make a couple batches of Tina’s Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies!

You can see my modifications here (and only because it’s what I had in the house!)

They’re just that good. And easy. You literally throw all the ingredients into a bowl and mix it together. That’s it.

I probably ate the equivalent of ~5 cookies while making the batter… and didn’t feel the least bit guilty – no eggs = no salmonella!

I made them about half the size this time… for the sole reason that there would be more cookies that way.

I need to direct my undivided attention to the Giants vs Reds game (it’s the top of the 9th and the Giants just came back to tie it up 3-3) so I’m off to watch that, and try not to eat the entire batch of cookies before boyfriend gets home from the gym (sharing is caring).

Helloooooo relaxing Friday night! After our whirlwind weekend last week, this is well-needed! 🙂

What’s your post workout snack?

I usually go for chocolate milk or an apple/toast with peanut/almond butter!

Foodie Friday- Primo Patio Cafe

Hope your Friday is going well!

For lunch, I met boyfriend and we ate outside by the water and relaxed… and it was beyond nice!

We went to Primo Patio Cafe to get our orders to go and I was beyond excited. Boyfriend had been talking this place up so I couldn’t wait to finally try it! The place was packed but we miraculously got our food extremely fast!

Don't let the exterior fool you, this place is fantastic

The "primo patio"

Our orders? Pita pockets stuffed with grilled lamb and veggies (mine were sans veggies, I have issues with cooking veggies which we’ll get into at a later date).  And seasoned fries of course!

As we all know I’m the no-condiment queen so I opted against the yogurt sauce served with the pitas, but boyfriend took full advantage and loved it!

The lamb pitas and fries were more than enough for me… and I even left a couple fries I was so full. This never happens – maybe once in a blue moon. About as often as when Gaga dresses like a “normal” human being.

We got our food to go and walked a few blocks down to the ballpark to eat by the water and bask in the sun.

It was SO nice, and quite honestly I didn’t want the lunch hour to end! I would definitely go back to Primo Patio Cafe… and hopefully soon!

Only a couple more hours until the weekend officially begins!

Spice Up Your Life

Not only did I own the CD, I also owned the movie. On VHS. One step further? I still have (multiple) Spice Girls songs on my running playlists. Nope, still not embarrassed.

The 2nd happiest day of the week (Saturday taking top-billing here), is finally upon us.

The sun even decided to show up today… it’s like it knows the significance of its presence over a weekend.

Would it shock any of you to hear that I inhaled a smoothie (surprise surprise) as usual today?

I swear I had good intentions to turn some leftover quinoa into “oatmeal” and add some delicious toppings. But, as usual – the promise of fruits, veggies, protein, and the general deliciousness of the smoothie, won out.

  • 1 c 1% Milk
  • Heaping scoop vanilla Elite whey protein powder
  • Handful spinach
  • Frozen strawberries
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Cinnamon
I swear the cinnamon makes all the difference.
Did you know aside from being my most favorite spice on this planet it has some surprising health benefits?
  • Studies have shown that just 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol.
  • Cinnamon may have a regulatory effect on blood sugar
  • Cinnamon has an anti-clotting effect on the blood
  • When added to food, it inhibits bacterial growth and food spoilage, making it a natural food preservative.
  • It is a great source of manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium.

My favorite things to put cinnamon in/on? Sliced apples, oatmeal, smoothies, PB Sandwiches, cookies, breads, pancakes, french toast, waffles, and…. well ok almost anything really! 🙂

Including these:

Since I totally neglected to share last night’s workout… I decided that since my quads were as useless as Hugh Hefner’s Ex that a long power walk to the Golden Gate Bridge and back with my lovely friend Lexi was in order. Overall we covered ~6 miles, had some great girltalk time, and my legs feel good as new this morning!

Sometimes backing off and slowing down is just what you need.

With that, I’m off to meet boyfriend for lunch! Apparently lunch dates and myself are likethis these days!

What’s your favorite spice?

What’s on your playlist that you’re not even a little bit embarrassed about?

(I have Bieber, Glee, Taylor Swift… you name it, I have it!)
